Khasi People

Organization: Base

Participant: Joy Pathaw

Country: India

The objectives of this program were to introduce India’s Khasi youth to their history and ancestral knowledge, connecting them with their roots and encouraging them to speak their native language. To achieve these objectives, the World Indigenous Day Forum was created.

The Forum consisted of two days of events focused on the preservation and enrichment of the Khasi language. These events included a panel discussion with experts on the different dialects of the language and the threats it faces; group discussions focused on identifying and resolving language challenges among the participating youth; and games aimed at showcasing the different dialects of the language. In total, 51 youth, men and women, participated in the event.
