Miskitu People

Organization: Asociación de Mujeres Indígenas Prinzu Awala Tagny

Participant: Jessmara Lissette Henríquez

Country: Nicaragua

The objective of this project was to provide humanitarian aid to the hurricane survivors of the Miskitu indigenous community, in the municipality of Prinzapolka in Nicaragua. The region suffered two major hurricanes, as it was already dealing with damage from past floods and other natural disasters. As a consequence, entire communities of Indigenous Peoples, along with their livelihoods and infrastructure, were severely affected. In response, the organization coordinated with the indigenous communal and territorial governments to distribute emergency kits to the affected populations.

In total, 200 hygiene kits were distributed to families in shelters across 12 communities, together with educational talks on COVID-19 and other preventable diseases.
