Mixtec People
Organization: Voices of the Original Peoples
Participant: Josefina Prudente Castañeda
Country: United States
This project worked with Mixtec Indigenous Women who have immigrated to the United States from Mexico and now live in New York City. The objective was to inform Indigenous Peoples about their rights in the country and to provide a community space for them to meet and express themselves.
The work focused on empowering the women participants and strengthen their independence, without them having to forget about their customs and languages. The program included a range of activities to address these issues, including language classes to preserve the indigenous languages and teach them to the participants’ children, information sessions on how to obtain free health insurance, therapy sessions, talks on self-protection and the prevention of domestic violence, and workshops to learn new skills.
