Mapuche People
Organization: Confederación Mapuche de Neuquén
Participant: Carolina Quintuparay
Country: Argentina
This project aimed to recognize the different types of violence faced by Indigenous Women, and to broaden their knowledge of their rights and access to justice. It was carried out by an organization made up of local councils of the Mapuche confederation, each encompassing some 10 communities, with approximately 20 families per community.
Two women from each local council participated in a series of four training sessions, which aimed to promote the human rights of Mapuche Women and combat gender violence within their communities; to contribute to the institutional strengthening of the Mapuche People through community statutes; to give new meaning to the roles of ancestral authorities; and to form a network of women to generate cultural strengthening strategies. Ancestral authorities of the communities participated in the last of the training sessions, when the participants were able to exchange ideas and information with them.
